About the game

Backgammon (called tavla in Turkish) is one of the oldest board games in the world, a perfect mix of strategy and luck that is loved everywhere from Istanbul's tea houses to family living rooms. On Güncel Oyun Oyna you can play backgammon online free against the computer, right in your browser. Three opponents are waiting for you: easy, medium and hard.

Every game you win earns you points, and if you win a gammon your points are doubled! Keep your winning streak alive and climb the leaderboard.

How to play backgammon

• Goal: Bring all 15 of your checkers into your home board (points 1-6 at the bottom right) and bear them off before your opponent does.
• Opening roll: Each side rolls one die and the higher roll goes first.
• Moving: For each of your two dice, move a checker forward that many points. You can use both dice on the same checker or on two different ones.
• Doubles: If both dice show the same number (e.g. 5-5), you play that number four times.
• Blocked points: You can't land on a point held by two or more of your opponent's checkers.
• Hitting: Land on a point with a single opposing checker (a blot) and you hit it. The hit checker goes to the bar in the middle and must re-enter through its opponent's home board.
• Bearing off: Once all your checkers are in your home board, you start removing them from the board according to your dice.
• Gammon: If you bear off all your checkers before your opponent has borne off even one, it's a gammon and the game counts double.

Forced move rules

In backgammon you must play your dice whenever you can. If both dice can be played, you must play both. If only one of them can be played, and each could be played on its own, you must play the higher one. Our game applies these rules automatically: only legal moves are highlighted in green.

Tips for winning

• Avoid blots: A checker standing alone can be hit. Whenever possible, move your checkers in pairs to make points.
• Close your home board: The more points you make in your home board, the harder it is for a hit checker to come back in.
• Build a prime: Four to six blocked points in a row will trap your opponent's back checkers.
• Watch the pip count: The pip count at the top of the screen shows how far each side still has to go. If you're ahead, race home; if you're behind, look for chances to hit.
• Reroll the dice: Got a terrible roll? Once per game you can watch a short ad and roll again.

Frequently asked questions

Are the dice fair? Yes, the dice are completely random. The computer can't see or change them.
What if I leave in the middle of a game? Your game is saved even if you close the browser. Open it again and pick up right where you left off.
Can I play with a friend? For now you play against the computer. A multiplayer mode is in the works.
Is there a doubling cube? No, games are played without the cube: a normal win is 1 game and a gammon counts double.
