About the game

Hill Rider is a physics-based hill climbing driving game where you take a bright orange off-road buggy as far as it will go over bumpy, rolling terrain. Your red-helmeted driver holds the wheel while you work the gas and brake pedals. The spring suspension flexes over every bump, the tyres spin on steep climbs and too much throttle makes the car pop a wheelie. The goal is simple yet tricky: go as far as you can before the fuel runs out, without flipping over and landing on your head!

The road never ends: hills, steep climbs, wooden ramps and swaying rope bridges get tougher the further you drive. Pick the green Meadow, the sandy Desert with its dunes and mesas, or the icy Snow map, each with its own ground and grip. There is nothing to download, and it plays free in your browser on phones, tablets and computers.

How to play

  • Phone: hold the GAS pedal at the bottom right to speed up and the BRAKE pedal at the bottom left to slow down or reverse. Both pedals support multi-touch.
  • Computer: โ†’ or D is the gas, โ† or A brakes and reverses. P pauses the game.
  • In the air the gas tilts the nose up and the brake tilts it down, so you can line up your landing or even pull off a flip.
  • If the driver's head hits the ground or the car ends up stuck on its roof, the run is over.
  • โ›ฝ Keep an eye on the fuel gauge. Red fuel cans along the road fill your tank; if you run dry, the run ends once the car rolls to a stop.
  • ๐Ÿช™ Coins are worth 1, 5 and 25. Arcs of coins hang in the air after the ramps.

Garage and upgrades

The coins you collect are saved to your account. In the garage you can upgrade four parts of your buggy up to level 4:

PartWhat it does
โš™๏ธ EngineMore torque and a higher top speed, so steep climbs get easier.
๐Ÿ”ฉ SuspensionStiffer springs and longer travel; the car soaks up bumps and stops bouncing on hard landings.
๐Ÿ›ž TyresBetter grip, with far less wheelspin on sand and ice.
โ›ฝ Fuel tankA bigger tank to cover the long gaps between fuel cans.

Bonuses

Launch off a ramp, spin all the way round and land on your wheels to earn a flip bonus (10 coins per flip). Staying in the air for more than a second also pays an air time bonus. Just be careful: land upside down and your driver's head hits the ground, ending the run!

Tips

  • Feather the throttle: holding the gas all the way up a steep hill makes the buggy rear up. As soon as the nose starts to lift, let go for a moment.
  • Balance in the air: watch the car's angle after a ramp. Nose up? Tap the brake. Nose down? Tap the gas. Aim to land with both wheels level.
  • Think about fuel: fuel cans get further apart the deeper you go. The fuel tank upgrade makes the biggest difference on long runs.
  • Drive for the map: wheels spin easily on sand and ice, so be gentle with the gas and build speed before the climb.
  • Take bridges calmly: rope bridges are flat, but the ground drops away at each end; hit them too fast and you may bounce.

Frequently asked questions

How is the score calculated? Your record is the longest distance you reach in a single run, in metres. Every run adds 1 leaderboard point for each 20 metres you drive.
What are coins for? Coins are saved to your account and spent in the garage on engine, suspension, tyre and fuel tank upgrades.
I crashed. Can I keep going? Once per run you can watch a short ad to put your car back on its wheels with a full tank and carry on from where you were. At the end of a run you can also watch an ad to double the coins from that run.
Can I play on my phone? Yes. The game is built for portrait screens with big gas and brake pedals, and it plays just as well with a keyboard on a computer.
