About the game
Chess is the world's most celebrated strategy game, with a history going back well over a thousand years. Here you can play chess online for free against the computer, choosing your colour and one of three difficulty levels. Every official rule is included: castling, en passant, pawn promotion, stalemate and draws by repetition. No download, no fuss — it works on your phone and your computer.
How to play
- Tap the piece you want to move and its possible squares are highlighted. Then tap the target square.
- The pawn moves forward and captures diagonally. On its first move it can advance two squares.
- The knight jumps in an L shape, the bishop moves diagonally, the rook in straight lines and the queen in any direction. The king moves one square in any direction.
- Attack your opponent's king so that it has no escape and it's checkmate — you win.
- If the player to move has no legal moves but their king is not in check, the game ends in stalemate (a draw).

Chess tips
- Control the centre: e4, d4, e5 and d5 are the heart of the board. Dominate them with your pawns and knights.
- Develop your pieces: don't move the same piece twice in the opening; get your knights and bishops into play.
- Castle early: tuck your king into a safe corner and connect your rooks.
- Ask yourself every move: what is my opponent threatening? Which of my pieces is unprotected?
- Forks and pins: attacking two targets at once with a single piece is one of the strongest tactics there is.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play as black? Yes, at the start you can choose white, black or a random colour.
Can I take back a move? Watch a short ad to undo your last move (up to 3 times per game).
How do I earn points? A win is worth 10 points on Easy, 25 on Medium and 50 on Hard. A draw earns 3 points.
Which notation is used in the move list? Standard algebraic notation: K king, Q queen, R rook, B bishop, N knight (e.g. Nf3, Qxd5, O-O).
