About the game

Reversi is a classic strategy game you can learn in a minute and spend years mastering. It's played on a green 8x8 board with discs that are black on one side and white on the other. Place a disc so that your opponent's discs are trapped between two of yours, and every trapped disc flips over to your colour. When the board is full, the player with the most discs wins. Because a single move can turn the whole board around, the tension lasts right up to the final disc.

Here you can play Reversi online for free, with no download: against the computer on three difficulty levels (Easy, Medium and Hard), with a friend as two players on one device, or online against a real opponent. Legal moves are shown on the board, discs flip with a smooth 3D animation and the last move is marked with a red dot. It plays comfortably on phones, tablets and computers.

How to play

  • The game starts with four discs in the centre (two black, two white, placed diagonally). Black always moves first.
  • Place your disc on an empty square so that one or more of your opponent's discs lie in a straight horizontal, vertical or diagonal line between it and another of your discs.
  • All the trapped discs flip to your colour. One move can flip discs in several directions at once.
  • Only moves that flip at least one disc are legal; the small dots on the board show where you can play.
  • If you have no legal move you must pass and your opponent plays again. When neither player can move, the game ends.
  • The discs are counted at the end and the player with more discs wins. Equal counts mean a draw.

Game modes

๐Ÿค– Versus the computer: Easy plays randomly and greedily, perfect for beginners. Medium understands the value of corners and edges and looks a few moves ahead. Hard searches deeply, weighs mobility and stable discs, and plays the endgame perfectly by calculating every possibility to the very end. Pick your colour: open with Black, reply with White or let chance decide. Made a mistake? You can โ†ฉ undo up to 3 times per game, and if you get stuck you can watch a short ad for a ๐Ÿ’ก hint.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Two players on one device: Put the phone or laptop between you and take turns. No points, just fun.

๐ŸŒ Online: With a free account you can open a table, choose the move timer (10, 20, 30 or 60 seconds) and send the invite link to a friend, or sit down at a table waiting in the lobby. Colours are random in the first game and swap in every rematch. Every move is checked against the rules on the server; if your time runs out a random move is played for you, and a player who keeps running out of time loses by forfeit. A win is worth +20 and a draw +5 online points.

Reversi strategy tips

  • Corners are gold: a disc in a corner can never be flipped and helps secure the edges around it. Always watch for a chance to take a corner.
  • Avoid the squares next to empty corners: playing diagonally next to an empty corner (the X-square) usually hands that corner to your opponent.
  • More discs isn't always better: in the opening and middle game, having fewer discs is often stronger. What matters is how many good moves you have, not how many discs.
  • Restrict your opponent's mobility: choose moves that leave your opponent few and poor options. An opponent with no good moves is forced to pass or give you a corner.
  • Keep your frontier small: the fewer of your discs border empty squares, the fewer moves your opponent gets. Try to keep your discs compact and central.
  • Take edges carefully: edge discs look safe, but if your opponent can squeeze in behind them, they may open the road to a corner.

Frequently asked questions

Who moves first? Black always moves first. When playing the computer you can choose your colour in the menu.
What if I have no legal move? Your turn is passed automatically and a โ€œPassโ€ message appears. When neither side can move, the game ends and the discs are counted.
How do I earn points? A win against the computer is worth 10, 20 or 35 points depending on the level, plus a bonus for a big disc margin (up to 4 on Easy, 8 on Medium and 15 on Hard). A draw earns 2, 4 or 8 points. Each undo reduces the points by 15% and each hint by 10%.
Do I need an account? No, you can play against the computer or on one device right away. Sign up for free to keep your points permanently, appear on the leaderboard and play online.
Are scores fair? Yes. Every finished game is replayed move by move on the server, so illegal or made-up results never earn points.
