About the game

Forbidden Words is a free online take on the classic party game where you describe a word without saying the obvious. Every card shows a word to describe and five forbidden words underneath. You have to get your team to say “cat”, but “meow”, “kitten”, “pet”, “purr” and “mouse” are off limits! The more inventive your clues, the faster your team gets there.

It runs right in your browser with nothing to download. Play an online team match with friends, practise against the computer when nobody is around, or take on the Daily cards challenge, where everyone gets the same 10 cards each day. The English deck has more than 450 original cards and the Turkish deck more than 600, spread across 15 categories from animals and jobs to food and sport, in easy, medium and hard levels.

How to play

  • Describe the card: the describer sees the card and types clues. Using the main word or any of the five forbidden words is not allowed, and sneaky versions like “cats”, “c a t”, “c.a.t” or “c4t” are caught automatically.
  • Let your team guess: teammates type their guesses and every correct card is worth +1. Stuck on a tough one? You can skip 3 times per turn.
  • Watch the rivals: the other team cannot see the card but reads every clue. If they spot a rule break, like spelling out letters or switching language, they hit 🚫 Forbidden!, the card is cancelled and a penalty applies.
  • Win: when the turns run out or a team reaches the target score, the team with the most cards wins. Winners get +25 online points, the other team +8, and a draw gives everyone +15.

Game modes

🤖 You guess: the computer describes the card one clue at a time. Guess on the first clue for 25 points, then 20, 15, 10 and 5 as more clues appear. Get as many cards as you can in 90 seconds with 3 skips, and watch a short ad for +15 seconds when time runs out.

🗣️ You describe: the card is yours! Type your clues and the computer guesses. Each correct card is +20, while a forbidden word costs −10 and the card. It is perfect practice for your next party.

📅 Daily cards: the same 10 cards for everyone, every day, with 120 seconds on the clock. Compare your score on the daily ranking; points count once a day.

🌐 Online: open a table on Online Forbidden Words and send the 🔗 link to your friends. Tables take 2-8 players, split into a red and a blue team by seat order, and the computer joins a team that is short of players. Prefer to play together? Switch to co-op and chase a team record. The host picks the turn time (60/90/120 s), the number of turns, a target score, the penalty and the card language.

Tips

  • Talk around the obvious: the first clues that pop into your head are usually forbidden. For “book”, try “something with a cover that you flick through” instead of “read”.
  • Send short clues, and lots of them: several quick lines beat one long sentence, because every line gives your team a fresh idea.
  • Use opposites and comparisons: “the opposite of night” or “the ship of the desert” get there fast without touching the forbidden list.
  • Do not get stuck: if a card is too hard, skip it. You have 3 skips per turn and the clock waits for nobody.
  • Guess the plain word: type the simple form of the word; “cats” counts as “cat”, and capitals do not matter.

FAQ

Is Forbidden Words free? Yes, completely free. There is no download, and it runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers.
What do I need to play online? A free account and at least one friend. Even two players can play, because the computer joins any team that is short. The modes against the computer work without an account.
Will it notice if I add an ending or split the word? Yes. The server checks word roots, endings, split spellings and numbers used as letters, and a caught clue is never shown to anyone.
Can the other team see the card? No. The card is only sent to the current describer, and the card order stays on the server.
How are points calculated? In single player every 10 points of your score is 1 leaderboard point (up to 40 per game). Online, the winning team gets +25, the other team +8 and a draw +15 each; in co-op you earn 5-25 points depending on cards per turn.
Can I play in Turkish? Yes. The host can switch the card language to Turkish, and the Turkish version of the site uses the Turkish deck in single player too.
