About the game

King is one of Turkey's best-loved four-player trick-taking card games, played everywhere from coffee houses and student dorms to family evenings and office breaks. In this free online King card game you sit at a green felt table and play classic Turkish King rules against three computer opponents or real people. It uses a standard 52-card deck, each player gets 13 cards per deal, and a full game lasts 20 deals. In every deal the player whose turn it is looks at their hand and picks the contract: either a penalty contract (No Tricks, No Hearts, No Kings/Jacks, No Queens, King of Hearts, Last Two) or a Trumps contract.

In the penalty contracts the aim is to avoid certain cards or tricks; in Trumps you try to take as many tricks as possible. When should you burn a penalty pick, and when should you save a strong hand for trumps? That balance is what makes King so addictive. There is nothing to download: play right in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. It is played for points only, with no money and no betting.

How to play

  1. In the menu, pick the difficulty (easy, medium, hard) and the game length (full game of 20 deals, or a quick game of 8 deals).
  2. When it is your turn, choose the contract in the pop-up window. Over the game each player picks 3 penalty contracts and 2 trump contracts, and each penalty contract is played twice in total. Your remaining picks are shown in the window and on the 📋 score sheet.
  3. The chooser leads the first trick and play goes anticlockwise. You must follow suit; the highest card of the suit led wins the trick, or the highest trump in a trump deal.
  4. In No Hearts and King of Hearts you cannot lead a heart until hearts are broken, and in Trumps you cannot lead a trump until trumps are broken. If you cannot follow suit you must play a trump in Trumps, or discard a penalty card in the penalty contracts.
  5. Playable cards glow. On a phone, tap a card once to lift it, then tap it again (or swipe up) to play it.
  6. After the last deal the highest total wins. The four players' totals always add up to zero.

Scoring

ContractPenalty / rewardDeal total
✋ No Tricks−50 for every trick taken−650
💔 No Hearts−30 for every heart taken−390
🤴 No Kings/Jacks−60 for every king or jack taken−480
👸 No Queens−100 for every queen taken−400
👑 King of Hearts (Rıfkı)−320 for taking the K♥−320
⏳ Last Two−180 for each of the last two tricks−360
⭐ Trumps+50 for every trick taken+650

A deal ends early once every penalty card has been taken (in King of Hearts, the moment the K♥ falls). In No Kings/Jacks, No Queens and King of Hearts, if you follow suit while a higher card is already on the table, you must give up your penalty card: when the A♥ is down, the K♥ has to go!

Tips

  • Save trumps for a strong hand: with a long suit and a few aces, call Trumps; with a weak hand, pick the penalty that will hurt you least.
  • Low cards are your shield: in the penalty contracts, plenty of low cards in a suit keep your high cards safe.
  • Run out of a suit: once you are void, you can dump your penalty cards on your opponents when that suit is led.
  • Count the cards: keep track of the high cards already played and cash your top cards at the right moment in Trumps.
  • In Last Two, unload early: the first eleven tricks cost nothing, so get rid of your big cards and keep small ones for the end.

Achievements and hints

Collect 8 achievements such as "Heart Dodger", "Trump Master", "Clean Hands" and "Thousand Club". If you get stuck, watch a short ad for 3 hints: the hard-level computer suggests the best card or contract for you. Twenty deals can take a while, so your game is saved on the server; close the page and you can pick up where you left off.
