About the game

Turkey Map Master is a free geography quiz that teaches you Turkey's 81 provinces while you play. You get a large map of Turkey drawn with real provincial borders and coloured by the country's seven geographical regions. When the question "Where is Sinop?" pops up, tap the province with your finger or mouse. Get it right and it turns green; miss it and the correct province flashes while the game tells you how far away you were and in which direction — "Getting close! Yours is ~120 km to the east." Every mistake becomes a clue for next time.

The heart of the game is your collection map. Each province you find on the map for the first time is added to your collection, and your grey map slowly fills with colour, region by region. The goal is simple and very moreish: colour in all 81. Whether you are planning a trip, learning Turkish, have Turkish roots or simply love maps, a few rounds are enough for the provinces to start falling into place. Pinch and drag on your phone, or use the mouse wheel on a computer. No sign-up needed.

Province names are kept in their original Turkish spelling (İstanbul, Şanlıurfa, Iğdır), so you also learn to recognise them on road signs and maps.

Turkey's 7 geographical regions

The colours on the map show the seven regions defined at Turkey's First Geography Congress in 1941. Knowing the region first is the quickest way to place a province:

  • Marmara (11 provinces): İstanbul, Edirne, Kırklareli, Tekirdağ, Kocaeli, Yalova, Sakarya, Bilecik, Bursa, Balıkesir, Çanakkale.
  • Aegean (8): İzmir, Manisa, Aydın, Denizli, Muğla, Uşak, Kütahya, Afyonkarahisar.
  • Mediterranean (8): Antalya, Isparta, Burdur, Mersin, Adana, Osmaniye, Hatay, Kahramanmaraş.
  • Central Anatolia (13): Ankara, Konya, Kayseri, Eskişehir, Sivas, Yozgat, Kırıkkale, Kırşehir, Aksaray, Nevşehir, Niğde, Karaman, Çankırı.
  • Black Sea (18): the coastal provinces from Düzce to Artvin plus Bolu, Karabük, Amasya, Tokat, Çorum, Gümüşhane and Bayburt — the region with the most provinces.
  • Eastern Anatolia (14): Erzurum, Erzincan, Kars, Ardahan, Iğdır, Ağrı, Van, Muş, Bitlis, Bingöl, Tunceli, Elazığ, Malatya, Hakkari.
  • Southeastern Anatolia (9): Gaziantep, Kilis, Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Mardin, Batman, Siirt, Şırnak.

How Turkish licence plate codes work

Every Turkish number plate starts with a two-digit province code, and the numbers follow a neat logic. Codes 01 to 67 were handed out in alphabetical order of the province names in use at the time: 01 Adana, 06 Ankara, 34 İstanbul, 35 İzmir, 67 Zonguldak. The few surprises come from old names — Mersin is 33 because it was called İçel, Kahramanmaraş is 46 because it was listed as Maraş, and Şanlıurfa is 63 because it was simply Urfa.

Codes 68 to 81 went to newer provinces in the order they were created: Aksaray, Bayburt, Karaman and Kırıkkale in 1989 (68–71), Batman and Şırnak in 1990 (72–73), Bartın in 1991 (74), Ardahan and Iğdır in 1992 (75–76), Yalova, Karabük and Kilis in 1995 (77–79), Osmaniye in 1996 (80) and Düzce in 1999 (81). Learn those two rules and you can guess most plates without memorising them.

How to play

  • 📍 Find on the Map: 12 provinces are named, tap each one on the map. Miss and you get a distance-and-direction hint.
  • 🚗 Plate Codes: answer "Which province is 34?" or "What is the plate code of Trabzon?" from four options. The numbers on offer are close together, so stay sharp!
  • 🍽️ Food & Landmarks: Cağ kebab, Sumela Monastery, Kırkpınar oil wrestling, Lake Salda… which province are they in? Every answer is followed by a short, accurate fact.
  • 🤝 Neighbours: "Which province borders Ankara?" After you answer, all of its neighbours light up on the map.
  • 🧭 Region Master: pick a region and find every province in it. You get three tries per province and your time is saved as a record.
  • 🏆 Complete All 81: find all 81 provinces in a row. Your best time goes on the leaderboard; each province you miss adds a time penalty.
  • 📅 Daily Challenge: the same 10 mixed questions for everyone, once a day, with its own daily ranking.

Scoring

A correct answer is worth 10 points, with a small speed bonus (+1 or +3). There is no time limit, so you never have to rush. In the region and all-81 modes a province found on the first try is worth 6 points and on a later try 3, with a bonus for finishing. Each province you find on the map for the first time joins your collection for +2 points. At the end of a round you can watch a short ad to double your points, and when you are stuck an optional ad hint shows the province's region or removes two wrong answers.

Tips for learning the provinces

  • Region first, then province: finish one region in Region Master before moving on. Learning the 18 Black Sea provinces as a chain along the coast from west to east is far easier than memorising them at random.
  • Build chains of neighbours: start from a province you know and work outwards. Once you know Ankara, Kırıkkale, Çankırı, Bolu and Eskişehir fall into place.
  • Use the edges as landmarks: border and coastal provinces such as Edirne, Hatay, Artvin and Hakkari make great anchors for the ones in between.
  • Read the distance hint: "~80 km to the north" teaches you where to look next time.
  • Remember the two plate rules: 1–67 alphabetical by old names, 68–81 in order of creation. Just keep İçel, Maraş and Urfa in mind.
  • A little every day: the Daily Challenge takes five minutes and builds the habit of repetition that makes knowledge stick.

For teachers and parents

Turkey Map Master works well as a classroom warm-up for lessons on Turkey's provinces and regions. Rounds are short (12 questions), the big map is easy to read on a projector, and the fact notes after each answer are great conversation starters. Ask students to compare their "Complete All 81" records or to solve the Daily Challenge every morning. You will find more educational games for younger children in our Learning section.

FAQ

Is Turkey Map Master free? Yes, completely free and it runs in your browser — nothing to install.
Does it work on phones? Yes. The map was designed for touch: pinch to zoom, drag to pan and tap a province. Zoom in a little to catch small ones such as Yalova, Kilis or İstanbul.
How accurate is the map? The provincial borders come from an open-source, MIT-licensed map of Turkey. Neighbour data was calculated from those borders and checked by hand; very short or disputed borders are never used in neighbour questions.
Where do the facts come from? Each province has at least two well-known, uncontroversial facts tied to it. Dishes claimed by more than one province were left out.
Can I replay the Daily Challenge? No, it is played once a day and everyone gets the same questions. If you stop halfway, you can continue later.
Do I need an account? No, you can play as a guest right away. Sign up for free to keep your collection, points and records and to appear on the leaderboard.
