About the game

Letter Board is a free word board game where you place seven letter tiles on a 15ร—15 board, build words that cross like a crossword and multiply your score on the coloured squares. Every word you form in a move must be in the dictionary, and every one of them scores. Squeezing big points out of a few tiles, landing tough letters on the right square and leaving nothing for your opponent is the whole art.

It runs in your browser with nothing to download. Play against the computer on three levels (Easy, Medium, Hard) with one, two or three opponents, pass one phone or tablet around for 2-4 players, meet friends at an online table, or take the Daily tiles challenge where everybody gets the same letters. The English bag follows English letter frequencies, and two blank tiles can stand in for any letter.

The English dictionary covers well over a hundred thousand words, including plurals, verb forms like -ed and -ing, comparatives and more. Every move is checked and scored on the server, and the bag and your opponentsโ€™ tiles stay on the server too, so nobody can cheat.

How to play

  • First word: the opening word must cover the โ˜… square in the centre and be at least two letters long. The star square doubles the word score.
  • Place tiles: drag a tile from your rack to the board, or tap a tile and then a square. On a computer you can click a square and type; click it twice to switch between across and down.
  • Connect: later words must touch tiles already on the board. Your tiles must sit in one row or one column with no gaps, and every side word you create is checked too.
  • Multiply: Lร—2 and Lร—3 squares multiply the letter on them, Wร—2 and Wร—3 squares multiply the whole word. Use all seven tiles in one move for a +50 bonus.
  • Swap or pass: with a weak rack you can exchange tiles (while at least 7 are left in the bag) or pass. If everyone passes twice in a row, the game ends.
  • Game over: when the bag is empty and a player uses their last tile, the game ends. Leftover tiles are subtracted from each score, and the player who went out collects them.

Game modes

๐Ÿค– Vs computer: on Easy the computer plays short, simple words, on Medium it finds good moves, and on Hard it plays the highest-scoring move it can find every turn. Pick one, two or three opponents. Stuck? Watch a short ad for a hint showing the best move for your tiles, or swap your tiles without losing your turn.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Pass & play: 2-4 players take turns on the same screen. The screen is covered between turns and the next player reveals their own tiles when ready, so nobody sees anyone elseโ€™s rack.

๐ŸŒ Online: open a table on Online Letter Board and send the ๐Ÿ”— link to your friends. Tables seat 2-4 players; the host chooses the turn time (1, 2 or 5 minutes), the dictionary language and, if wanted, computer players to join. A player who runs out of time passes, and the computer takes over for anyone who disconnects.

๐Ÿ“… Daily tiles: every day everybody gets the same board and the same seven tiles. You have a single move: find the highest-scoring word, take your place on the daily ranking and compare it with the best move the game found.

Tips

  • Multiply the expensive letters: put Q, Z, X or J on an Lร—3 square and form words in both directions so the letter counts twice.
  • Use hooks: adding S, ED or ER to a word on the board is an easy connection that scores both the old word and the new one.
  • Balance your rack: two or three vowels is the sweet spot. If you are stuck with consonants, do not be afraid to swap.
  • Guard the red squares: avoid opening a lane to a Wร—3 square for your opponent, or leave letters that make it hard to score there.
  • Save the blank: a blank scores 0, so keep it to complete a seven-tile bonus or to reach a big multiplier.
  • Plan the endgame: as the bag runs low, avoid holding high-value tiles, because leftovers are subtracted from your score.
