About the game

Four in a Row is a quick, two-player strategy game played on an upright board with 7 columns and 6 rows. Players take turns dropping discs into the columns, and each disc slides down to the lowest free slot. Line up four of your discs horizontally, vertically or diagonally before your opponent does and the game is yours. You can learn the rules in a minute, but beating a strong opponent means thinking a few moves ahead. How to play

• You play yellow and the computer plays red. Choose who moves first at the start of the game.
• Tap or click a column and your disc drops to the lowest empty slot in it. You can also play with the 1-7 keys.
• Connect four discs horizontally, vertically or diagonally to win; the winning line lights up on the board.
• If all 42 slots fill up without a line of four, the game ends in a draw.

Four in a Row tips and strategy

• Take the center: The middle column is part of more possible lines than any other. Play in and around it early on.
• Build a double threat: If you can complete a line in two different places at once, your opponent can only block one of them.
• Don't set up your opponent: Before dropping a disc, check whether the slot right above it would hand your opponent a win.
• Odd and even rows: Late in the game, threats on odd rows (1, 3 and 5 from the bottom) are stronger for the player who moved first, while even rows favor the second player.

Frequently asked questions

Who goes first? You decide at the start: you, the computer, or alternating every game.
I dropped a disc in the wrong column. What now? Watch a short ad to take back your last move, up to 3 times per game.
How do I earn points? A win is worth 5, 12 or 25 points depending on the difficulty, and a draw is worth 2. Using undo reduces the points slightly.
Do I need to install anything? No. Four in a Row runs in any modern browser on phone, tablet or computer.
